73, 133, 241 and 261 travelers beware of email scam

73, 133, 241 and 261 drivers beware of toll-payment email scam

If you receive an email that appears to be from E-ZPass claiming you have not paid tolls on toll roads, do not respond or try to pay. It is a scam, Orange County toll road officials warned Monday.

Drivers nationwide have been receiving a phishing email, allegedly from E-ZPass, claiming that they owe money for unpaid tolls, said Lori Olin, a spokeswoman for the Transportation Corridor Agencies, the agency in charge of managing four Orange County toll roads.

The fraudulent email is a so-called phishing scam, and drivers should not open it, respond to it or attempt to download attachments, Olin said. Orange County toll roads do not even use E-ZPass to assess tolls. The county’s toll roads’ automatic payment systems are FasTrak and ExpressAccount.
